1912 - 2002

BRISBANE, DARWIN, MELBOURNE, PERTH, SYDNEY AND TOWNSVILLE COAST STATIONS CLOSED DOWN

The transmitters are silent now, the static from the receivers is no more. For the first time in it's ninety-year history, the Australian Coastal Radio Service has stopped listening for distress calls.

At 2359 UTC on 30th June 2002 the continuous monitoring of all distress and safety frequencies in the maritime mobile radiotelephone service by the Telstra network of coast radio stations came to an end.

For the men and women of the Australian Coastal Radio Service this is the end of their service to mariners which has been carried out with dedication, pride and exemplary professionalism in all respects.

We wish all mariners fair winds and following seas.

Radio Officers of the maritime mobile service, we salute you all!
